How to choose the right winter jacket

Some people wear only one jacket during the winter. Others alternate between two or three jackets. It is important to consider the temperature (obviously) and what you intend to do with your ski jacket. For example, on a day of intense cross-country skiing, you might choose a thin windbreaker, even at -20 ° C. On the other hand, when I walk around the city at night, I like long, thick and warm jackets.

What winter jacket do you need?

There are three main types of winter jackets. Think about what you are trying to do to find the right activity for you. Do you need a jacket to walk around the city or work, or are you looking for something to wear in the backcountry?

If you're looking for lightweight warmth, the technical jacket is perfect for any outdoor activity. Brands like Empirelion make jackets for everything from skiing to ice climbing to mountaineering, not just in cold weather.

These jackets include more technical features such as helmet compatible hoods and pit zippers to increase airflow during high intensity activities. In general, technical jackets are lighter than casual winter jackets and are easier to compress and pack. Most technical jackets designed for intense winter sports have a three-layer (3L) construction. This term is most often associated with membranes such as GORE-TEX, which uses a layering system to create a durable waterproof shell, making it ideal for wear during layering. Since more layers can sometimes mean more weight, some technical jackets are designed to be bulky and reduce weight while maintaining complete weather protection.

What is the difference between down fiber and synthetic fiber?

There are two main types of insulation for winter jackets: down and synthetic.

Each type of insulation has its strengths and weaknesses, so it's best to do a survey to make sure you're buying the right winter jacket for your needs.

1. Down: Designed for cold and dry climates

Down is the lightest and most compressible insulation on the market, so if weight and size are important, you should choose down first. However, it is important to remember that down is not ideal when wet. When you spend the winter in a dry, cold climate, down jackets offer maximum potential and protect you from bad weather, but if you live in a climate like the West Coast of British Columbia, down jackets have their potential. You may not be able to fully demonstrate your abilities.

When the duvet gets wet, the feathers harden and lose their insulation and bulk. In most cases, the coat needs to be properly dried in a dryer to regain its original bulk.

2. Synthetic insulation-designed for cold and humid climates

A variety of proven synthetic insulation is available. Synthetic insulation may be heavier than down, but it's just as warm, more affordable and effective against moisture.
